War monger -- when the cause was just and liberty was threatened (not because his neoconservative pals used him and the 9/11 victims as tool to implemenet their longstanding agenda.
Revolutionary, you bet. When government forgets that it must be honest and accountable and serve all the people recognizing the rights of the minority. Patriotic yet willing to see the foibles of his adopted country and oppose slavery. Probably not the kind of guy who would challenge fellow citizens' patriotism because they disagreed with government policies.
Simple regulatory government -- what's not to like there? I'll bet he wouldn't have been to supportive of wire taps, false imprisonment, imprisonment without charges or advice of counsel -- all couched in the extraordinarily dangerous rationale of "we're just trying to protect the innocent," but omitting the rest of the thought "we'll decide just whose innocent." What do you think old Thom would have written about the unprecedented secrecy of the current Administration and unwillingness to answer questions. (Don't you wonder who attended those energy meetings with Mr. Cheney and why its so important that the information doesn't get out? Wouldn't you like to see an unscripted press conference where probing questions and the now prohibited follow-up questions were welcomed, and answered?)
Victim of censorship and imprisonment for voicing his opposition to rulers and objecting to an execution. I don't see a lot of Republicans standing up for a free press or opposing the death penalty (except for bounties on a few individuals they have kindly pre-selected for us.)
Rich and powerful friends? Seems like a lot of them shared political and philosphical outlooks rather than corporate directorships. Looks to me like he got some recommendations and then worked hard for noble causes rather than personal gain. Did I miss the part where he went hunting with Jefferson so he could for a tax break for independent publishers?
I find it hard to believe Paine was even of the same species as Mr. Limbaugh, let alone political affiliation.

I stand corrected, he was a Democrat. If there was a doubt, just look at the immediate and vituprative response provided to a few modest observations based on his prior history. I wonder if he had any interns. Also, its easy to look good helping the French instead of attending to domestic policies.
